nonprofit challenge
The Water Challenge 2026
A one-day build for a real charity. Judges are asking whether WaterAid Canada could adopt the result, so feasibility, oversight and cost carry as much weight as the demo.

Before the event
Teams meet before the day to read all ten briefs and agree on one. Research, questions for the WaterAid mentor and the Team Brief can be prepared in advance.

Rules that change your plan
| Rule | What to do about it |
|---|---|
| Each track weights the same six criteria differently. | Read your track's weights first: Track A rewards adoption (25%), Track B mission impact (30%), Track C architecture (30%). |
| Craft & Communication is worth 5% in every track. | Spend the day on the system, the review step and the cost case, not on slides. |
| Governance & Human-in-the-Loop is 15% in every track. | Show where a person reviews the output and how errors are caught, inside the demo. |
| Every brief asks for costs and limits. | Bring a running-cost estimate and say plainly what the tool cannot do. |
| Track B assumes patchy connectivity and few technicians. | Design for offline and low-skill use from the start. |
| A finished system is not expected. | A working slice plus tested assumptions beats a broad, untested mock-up. |
How it is judged
| Criterion | Track A · Organizational Capability | Track B · Field Systems & Service Delivery | Track C · Systems Blueprint |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mission Impact Real-world or social impact, practical utility. | 20% | 30% | 25% |
| Architectural Soundness Advanced technical knowledge and difficulty. | 20% | 15% | 30% |
| Feasibility Answers the stated challenge; complete, feasible and usable (NASA Space Apps 'Relevance'). | 25% | 25% | 10% |
| Governance & Human-in-the-Loop Shows which decisions stay with people, where a person checks the work and how mistakes get caught. | 15% | 15% | 15% |
| Economic Durability What it costs to build and run, who pays after the pilot, and whether that is less than what it saves. | 15% | 10% | 15% |
| Craft & Communication Narrative, pitch delivery and demo storyline. | 5% | 5% | 5% |
Judges. The organizer says promising work will be reviewed by the WaterAid staff responsible for that area of work and its future direction.
The six judging areas are the same for every track; each track weights them differently (see tracks). Presentation polish is worth 5% everywhere.

Plan it with the harness
CrafterWIKI's planner runs these steps in order. The event's rules decide how far you may go before it starts.
- Recon: rules, rubric, judges, prizes ·
- Patterns from past winners ·
- Problems and angles ·
- Gate 1: judge panel ·
- Demo script and pitch ·
- Gate 2: team approval ·
- Architecture ·
- Build plan ·
Run recon, patterns, angles, the judge gate and the demo script before the day. Leave architecture and building for the event unless the organizers confirm pre-written code is allowed.

Ask the organizers
- Is code written before the day allowed, or only research and planning?
- Which sample or synthetic data will be provided on the day?
- How long is each team's presentation slot, and who is in the room?
